Sweetly Spooky!

October is the month for ghosts, ghouls, and gumballs!

I think it is awesome that October doesn't go quietly into the night like almost every other month. Nope! October goes out on a sweetly spooky strut!

Remember when people handed out homemade treats like yummy cookies, fresh popcorn balls, and handmade taffy? We used to get apples from people's trees, too.

Bagged candy has replaced those goodies. Which candy is your fave? Here are the top five top sellers in recent years. Is your go-to snack on the list? (One of my faves – 3 Musketeers – didn't make the top five!)

#5. Starbursts

Originally a British fave called "Opal", Starbursts are a chewy Halloween staple. The original fruit flavors still rule but Starburst has other tasty flavors, including Tropicals, FaveReds, and Sours. Which is your favorite chew?

#4. Snickers

Some call this traditional candy bar the most perfect candy. It has nougat, caramel, and peanuts covered in milk chocolate. What's not to love about this chewy, crunchy treat?

#3. M&M's

"Melts in your mouth, not in your hand" has been their motto for decades! The traditional milk chocolate goodie has some interesting cousins: peanut, caramel, peanut butter, cocoa crisp, and even milk chocolate popcorn flavors! Yes, they have combined the chocolate with buttered popcorn for a totally unique flavor!

#2. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

Hubby's fave! Hershey's iconic candy is fabulous as a snack or as a great s'mores treat. Try replacing the classic Hershey's chocolate bar with the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup! The chocolate-peanut butter flavor elevates the campfire treat to a deliciously sinful gourmet delicacy!

And the #1 choice is…

Skittles!

Like the Starbursts and M&Ms, Skittles comes in an array of flavors. And like Starbursts, Skittles are a British creation!

Although the classic fruit flavor Skittles still dominate the top candy choice, you can choose from a variety of flavors. For a variety, pick from sour, tropical, orchard, wild berry, or even "flavor mashups". Looking for more exciting flavors? Why not try "fizzed fruit", "crazy cores", "sweet heat spicy", or Skittles bubblegum! If you can't find them in your local stores, you can order them online.

So, are you buying candy for your trick-or-treaters or for your sweet tooth? (If you are like 90% of people, you will sneak a nibble of two of the Halloween treats!) Which candy is your fave? Or do you prefer baked treats?

Enjoy October and help ring in November with some fun and fantasy!
